NZ Police ban league, soccer, boxing, tae kwon do, judo, karate, and arm-wrestling

In response to news of drunken Christchurch yokels exercising their right to participate in backyard brawling, Acting Detective Inspector David Long, of the Christchurch police, said people could not consent to being assaulted.

I call bullshit on that one.

Of course you can consent to being assaulted - otherwise contact sports and martial arts would be illegal, or at least rendered impossible by virtue of the frequency of criminal charges being brought against those who, e.g., tackle opposition players, or deliver round-house kicks to the heads of opponents.

Professional rugby union would be exempt from the law, as the idea is avoid the risk of being tackled by an opponent by kicking the ball away as soon as possible.

The issue that wouldn't die

Who 'stole' Don Brash's emails? Now Labour is joining the old philanderer in calling for the Police file to be released in full. Said philanderer is muttering darkly about "political bias".

Methinks the trail leads very, very close to the top indeed. Say, about one step down from the top.

Zero Tolerence indeed.

Chuck another civil liberty on the barbie mate

I must admit my heart skipped a beat when I saw the new Criminal Investigations (Bodily Samples) Amendment Bill National is passing through Parliament at the moment - whereby any New Zealander who police intend to charge with a crime can have their DNA taken by force.

My initial fear was that the new tool in the State's arsenal might be detrimental to civil liberties in New Zealand and the system open to abuse by the Police i.e. police see kid with attitude, police say kid has broken the law by...insert bogus reason....police take kid to police station and forcibly take DNA and run it through the system...police decide not to press charges afterall....police have a good laugh about harrassing kid with attitude after shift.

I immediately recalled Norightturn's recent commentry on the country's "toxic police culture" following the decision they made not to prosecute a police recruit who was going around assaulting people:
Unfortunately the police's response shows that they have learned nothing from the Clint Rickards saga. Rickards wasn't just a bad person: he was a product of the toxic police culture that had recruited, trained, socialised and promoted him - a culture in which police protected their own and actively conspired to cover up each other's crimes. That culture is clearly still alive and well, and as long as it is, we will see people like Rickards and his accomplices again and again, and the confidence the public have in the police will continue to decline.
But then, to my great relief, I read further into National's press release and discovered the potential for abuse is virtually non-existant - as Justice Minister Simon Power has seen to it that:

the police will develop guidelines to avoid any arbitrary or unreasonable application of this power...."It must be remembered that this tool can do just as much for those who are innocent as those who are found guilty of a crime.”
Oh well, as long as the Police will be overseeing the Police, then I guess everything is just swell.

WTF?!

Is it just me or is the mainstream media in this country getting weirder and weirder?

Leading TV3 tonight is a story on a guy who faked his own death. The story was fairly old, it seemed the only news was that he has now been named. Whoopdy shit, this is a human interest story, albeit it a fairly sad, sick twisted one.

This bumped the DEATH OF A POLICE OFFICER ON DUTY (something which happens on average about once every 5 years) to the second news item.

Are they taking the piss or what?

Minister Banks: "Crown Crime Enterprise launched in Manukau Ward" 2 Feb, 2009

Rt Hon John Banks
Minister of Crime & Lord Mayor of Auckland
The Beehive
Wellington

2 Feb 2009

"It is with great pleasure I announce a contract for the first Crown Crime Enterprise in the Manukau Ward of my beloved Greater Real Auckland Mega-Metropolis Area Region ('GRAMMAR')," his Worship said.

The Crown has entered into a contract with the previously-feared Wu Tang Triad of Botany Downs to flight crime in the area.

"This is an important first step in reducing crime in Auckland/GRAMMAR, so cruelly abandoned under nine long years of Labour government.

"By scrapping Working For Families, and diverting money into a series of Crown Crime Enterprises (CCEs), we will deliver significant benefits to those New Zealanders who remain in work," the Minister continued.

Lord Banks said the Wu Tang Triad would fight crime on a maximum 98% of the budget previously wasted by the socialized Police force, but would only be paid upon delivery of wanted criminals, or their heads, to local "Kiwi Incarceration Enterprises" (KIEs), previously known as prisons.

"Wu Tang will later be joined by other crime-fighting groups, such as the the Mighty Purebred Mob Inc., and compete to capture criminals (or their heads) in the Manukau region," the Lord Mayor of Auckland/GRAMMAR and senior government minister stated.

"Together with head of the State Law and Order Restoration Commission (SLORC), Tau Henare, Minister for Roads, Tony Friedlander, and Prime Minister for Life, HRH John Key, this is another example of the National party delivering on its promise of efficiency in these lean times."

"Crown Crime Enterprises may be fully privatized in the near future, to allow those New Zealanders who remain in paid work to contract their own security, according to their own needs, which will ensure safe journeys for all, along highways paved with good intentions and low taxes, to your nearest Crown Health Enterprise (CHE), or to visit a relative in the nearest KIE," the Lord Mayor explained to an adoring audience outside a liquor store on Great South Road.

"We will stop at nothing in paying large American corporations to build new KIEs in every community, and since we scrapped the Resource Management Act (RMA), that's a lot easier than it used to be," added the Minister for the Environment, and Minister for Tight Neckties, Nick Smith.

Economic terrorism

That's what it will be if the truck drivers' tax rebellion produces the "paralysis" (John Campbell, 3 July 2008) the media is salivating for.

People are being told to stay home. Right, and at whose expense would this unscheduled day off be? If it's mine, the truck drivers are stealing my annual leave. If it's my work, they're stealing my employer's money - via my salary - as surely as if they embezzled it directly.

People are being told to go in to work after 11 am. Right, and if I work in a shop, who is going to serve the customers earlier in the day? Oh, that's right, said customers won't be there ... to the detriment of hard-working business owners and their employees. Again, the truck drivers might as well just reach right into the tills and steal the morning's cash taking, and siphon the eftpos sales directly into their fucking diesel accounts.

Those with early morning flights are being told to consider staying at airport hotels overnight. Right, and to which trucker should I send the invoice for said accommodation? What that's ... you expect it to come out of my post-tax salary? Get to fuck! Perhaps if I don't like paying the GST on said hotel bill, or the taxes of fuel I will use to get there, I could just park my car sideways across a couple of lanes of the airport motorway, and walk to my departure gate?

Bus passengers are going to be ejected on the city edge and told to hoof it, regardless of (dis)ability or weather. And it would be a long fucking hike from John Andrew Ford on Gt North Rd to my workplace.

And the Police seem entirely complicit in this terrorizing of the civilian population.

Where's that pepper spray when you need it, you spineless fucks? Break into the first 10 truck cabs that appear in the downtown convoy and break a few fucking heads, I say.

If it's good enough for the proletarians it's good enough for tax rebels in the petite bourgeoisie.

Police brutality

I can't even be bothered doing the research to ensure my comments are accurate I am so pissed off.

Those FOUR police officers pepper-sprayed and truncheoned ONE man who was acting a bit crazy and refusing to cooperate with them at the police-station.

The brutal and sadistic application of physical force to break the will and make cooperative a prisoner is called TORTURE.

I'm being assaulted... so where the bloody hell are you?!

Seriously, this is but a drop in the teacup.

Just about everybody I know has a story about some dodgy incident where they called the cops who then proceeded to do nothing.

And they reckon they are too busy.

My fucking arse they are. 16 days to deal with this kids case when you see them all the same fucking areas (namely mine) checking peoples warrant and rego, and up and down the highways pulling over heavy vehicles for a 3000 point inspection so they can fine the trucking or bussing company 5,000.

The latest one I heard was a bloke having his large work garage broken into with grafitti there. The cops reckoned the perpetrators would be back so he should sleep inside and call a police number and a cell phone number of the officer he dealt with.

Sure enough during the night he hears them come up, calls the first number, gets told they are too busy, calls the bloke on the cell phone who says, sorry mate, I'm too busy and that's that. He was left to go charging out with a pipe and start bashing the car forcing them into hooning off. The next day the cop shows up to check if everything is alright!!! FFS!!! And then they tell him he's bloody lucky because he could have hurt them and got into trouble himself.

More top police work

They make u-turns at will.

Upon completing a quick search of the BIR archive, I see we have frequently made comment on such idiocy on the part of the police. For poor driving, idiotic prosecutions, and both of the above.

Smart-ass good for nothing cops

I've had it with the cops at the moment. Last night at rush hour on Mayoral Dr: an unmarked squad car (blue Holden Commodore) with two uniformed officers inside weaves between lanes like the village drunk, performs a u-turn for no good reason, drives at 15kph up and down the street, all the while turning lights on and off arbitrarily. Dorks.

The family of the poor bugger murdered in the dairy in Manukau must have taken a lot of comfort in this police response: essentially, "yeah, dairies get robbed all the time and we knew this would happen sooner or later."

Further south again, some guy who's had a few too many wines in Queenstown is asked to leave the bar, and gets charged and convicted for "using insulting language" ... because he said police were "all rapists anyway". Resisting arrest, sure. But insulting fucking language ... get a life. Dicks.

Meanwhile, in Australia, Townsville Police arrested and charged Jonathon Thurston for "public drunkeness" - the heinous crime of walking home a bit drunk, not being able to find his keys, and deciding to take a nap in his own fucking front yard. For fuck's sake, who hasn't been guilty of that?

Business as usual?

A cop makes a three point turn on a bend of a narrow provincial highway, thereby blocking both lanes, and two motorcyclists coming around the corner wear the damage: serious bloody injuries, plus two smashed Italian bikes. The idiot cop whose dangerous maneuver is responsible for the whole thing blames the motorcyclists for speeding (of course he would have taken the bend at 35 kph, anticipating that some idiot could be blocking both lanes with his large Australian sedan).

In other news:

1/ Outrageous Fortune was bloody good last night.
2/ I accidentally (I must stress this!) saw David Beckham at Wellington Airport, as he was departing for the Spice Girls concert in Vancouver.

On a livelier note, the pitch at Dunedin's "new" test venue, the University Oval, looks, um, lively: "34 wickets fell inside two days of a State Championship match" between Otago and Auckland.

In Auckland's second innings, there were 5 ducks, and only 3 guys made it past eight. Yes, eight.

Don't worry, NZ Cricket is sending its "top turf doctor". I can picture it now: "Out of my way, I'm a turf doctor!" WTF? Since NZ Cricket can't select its way out of a candy shop, I doubt it's on top of the turf thing.

Actually, I say leave the thing as it is and take our chances. I've often thought Dunedin would be the only place we might hope to dismiss a test team for less than 26, and thereby get this monkey off our backs.

Imagine the following:

Team from the subcontinent (in this case the weakest team, Bangladesh)
+ howling cold southerly (unlikely but not impossible in early January in Dunedin - December would be preferable)
+ cloud cover (highly likely)
+ green top (possible - something is up with the pitch)
+ NZ wins the toss and fields
= ????

If we had Bond steaming in with the southerly at his back (although the pitch seems to be aligned NW-SE, rather than strictly N-S, but you get the idea) they'd be in all sorts of trouble. But Bond is injured so it's business as usual.

You can zoom in a have a look at the pitch here.
