NZ - Australia Test Averages against each other

I'm predicting a loss for us late on the 4th day. All depends on that first innings though. If we bat and knock up 400+ we can do alright. Where are our hundreds going to come from I wonder?

Our batting lineup with experience against the Aussies have only scored 2 centuries against them in 67 digs combined (plus 12 50s).

Their batting lineup has 6 centuries against us from 53 digs (plus 13 50s and 3 more 50s from Warne who fancies himself as an alrounder against us.... wanker).

Aussies Who Have Had A Crack At Us B4

bowling: 268 runs, 2 wickets, ave 134.00
Average of 134. I think it would be fair to say that the Aussie batsman don't cry themselves to sleep at night when thinking of facing him off his 10 yard run up.

bowling: 33 wickets, best:7/87, ave 29.33
not bad lad, not bad at all. Good luck on the Gabba pitch though :(

Comments:
I think these stats are telling, as they show who our class players have been(i.e., those who can perform against classy opposition ... well, classy on the pitch at least). Astle with the bat, Vettori with the ball.

I was a bit surprised to see McMillan with a half-respectable average ... he may be living on past glories against the Ozis though.

They have 5 batsmen with higher averages than our best batsman (Astle), and Warne averages as much with the bat as McMillan, and more than Richardson.

At the Gabba I suspect the trick is bat first, survive the first session (1/70 would be fine), and then make hay while the Queensland sun shines.

I bought a radio to listen in from the office ... having said that Radio Sport had better have some fucking coverage, and I don't want it interrupted constantly for your crap ads, crap news, or crap discussions of crap rugby union. e.g., "Does Tana have a sore thumb?" etc.

One of my complaints with the NZ media is the obsessive, almost entirely uncritical coverage of Union, to the extent that on the hottest day of summer the lead "story" in the sporting press will be some 3rd rate union player might miss the opening game of the Super 12 because he hurt his toe, or dislocated his penis, etc.

Batting first and 0/21 so far ... see-moan must be pleased. Haven't heard any rugby "news" on Sports Radio yet either.

A duck from Fleming. Way to lead from the front.

That's his 5th duck against Aussie in tests. Now he averages 26.6 against them. Tits on a bull!!!

Lara basically struggled against McGrath and Cullinan against Warne.

Fleming seems to struggle against all of them.

2/67 at lunch ... not too far from my hoped-for 1/70, although slight advantage to their Ozis (over our ones).

Anyone else surprised the Ozis didn't play Lee ... NZ has always struggled against genuinely fast bowling ... a certain W. Younis always did very well against us.

Just looking at the records of the players you named.

Atherton played a massive number of innigs against the Aussies. 66 in all. averaged 29.68

Hussein averaged 38.56 (more than his full average).

Lara averages 51.45 against aussie and has 8 centuries and 11 50s.

He's had a run of 5 low scores and 4 low scores against them but aside from that he's been a run machine against them.

Cullinan averaged 12.75 against them, so him and Sinclair should get together.

Although Sinclair is on 21* so hopefully he can at least beat his previous best of 29. My prediction is he gets 79.

I've commented on Sinclair a fair bit in the past. he's just so hit and miss.

He's a bad starter and when he gets in he can make some big runs. But he just never seems to settle at the crease long enough.

Myself and dc_red went to Napier for a one dayer a couple of years ago and he made one of the ugliest 70odds I've ever seen. Just never settled. Basically won the game for us though.

I think if you take out his test hundreds he averages about 20.

We need 300+ just to stay in this test but ideally 400 to give us something to bowl at. 500 would be a dream with this side.

We need a hundred from 2 out of Styris, Sinclair, Astle and McMillan plus some runs from Oram and McCullum and the others chipping in with a few as well.

Asking the impossible?

kiss of death there from you see-moan!!!!

actually i've just remembered about my cynical call that McMillan would probably be back in the NZ team in 3 weeks to face the aussies becasue of our lack of depth.

And it's turned out to be true.
